Season 1977-78

St. Mirren began their first season in the Premier Division with a 1-1 draw against fellow newcomers Clydebank. Over the next few weeks they recorded victories over Ayr United and Motherwell and drew 3-3 at home to Rangers in a thrilling match which saw them come from behind twice. Goals from McGarvey x2 and Brian Docherty earning a point and making the rest of the country sit up and take notice of the new boys.
Over the course of the season they were never in any danger of relegation and maintained a mid table position. This was helped by the performances against Celtic with three wins and a draw against the Glasgow giants.
The season also saw saints participate in the Anglo Scottish Cup for the first time. They defeated Stirling Albion 5-1 on aggregate in the first round. This set up a meeting with Fulham, who included George Best in their ranks. The first leg at Craven cottage saw Lex Richardson score in a 1-1 draw.
The Love Street tie was a cracker. George Best scored a 25 yarder, but Saints ran out 5-3 winners with goals from McGarvey2, Docherty and two own goals. The semi final paired Saints with Notts County and 2-1 victory put the Buddies in the final against Bristol City.
Unfortunately the English club proved too strong and won 3-2 on aggregate.
The footballing world was to be shocked when, despite having just finished a successful season, Saints sacked Alex Ferguson during July 1978. There are many rumours and theories as to the reasons for the sacking but whatever the reasons this sent shock waves throughout the football world.
