Season 1974-75

The start of the following season saw much the same from the team. They dropped out of the league cup at the group phase and were very inconsistent in the league with a 4-0 win over Stranraer being followed by a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Falkirk. Following a 3-0 reverse at home to East Fife Willie Cunningham called time on his reign as manager. The board asked him to recommend a replacement, the rest as they say is history, as Alex Ferguson became the sixth manager to sit in the hot seat in four years.
Fergie brought more consistency to Saints play and by the end of the year they had achieved sixth place in the second division, which gained promotion to the new first division after league reconstruction.
During the latter part of the season signs were evident that St. Mirren was a team on the up with some young players beginning to make a name for themselves.
