Season 1972-73

On the back of the high scoring achievement from the previous season, Saints gained entry to the Drybrough Cup prior to the start of season 1972-3. This competition was open to the top scoring sides in the country. Unfortunately the scoring record was not maintained and Aberdeen won 1-0 in the first round.

In the League Cup the only notable event was a 4-1 win over Rangers at Ibrox with Ally McLeod claiming all four goals. However, by this point Saints were out of contention for the section and only pride was achieved. McLeod started the league in similar form with a double in a 5-1 win over Brechin City.

The season as a whole was very inconsistent with some fine wins followed by periods of poor results. This was not helped by the fact they lost Gordon McQueen to Leeds Utd. and Jim Blair to Norwich during September. Manager Tommy Bryceland had to put his faith into the youth players at the club and one of the youngsters he brought into the team was to become a legend in the history of the club, Tony Fitzpatrick.

The goal-scoring exploits of Ally McLeod continued with three in a 6-3 win over Cowdenbeath, but this was overtaken by his namesake Gus McLeod who rattled in five during a 7-1 defeat of Hamilton.Come seasons end they finished fifth. Ally McLeod left for Southampton and manager Tommy Bryceland decided that he could no longer work under conditions where he had to continually sell off the clubs biggest assets and resigned.

In his place came another former player, Willie Cunningham.
