Season 2021-22

Unlike the previous few seasons, Saints' preparations for the new season started in a strong position with most of the squad still under contract. Jim Goodwin added defenders Charles Dunne from Motherwell and St. Johnstone wing back Scott Tanser, Kilmarnock midfielders Alan Power and Greg Kiltie and forward Curtis Main from Shrewsbury Town.
The loan system brought in midfielder Conor Ronan from Wolves.
With Covid still affecting the country Saints first scheduled match against Dumbarton in the League Cup was cancelled due to an outbreak in the Sons squad giving Saints a 3-0 win. They progressed through a group which also included Dunfermline Athletic, Partick Thistle and Stenhousemuir before they lost out on penalties to Livingston in the second round.
League form started with four draws in the first 6 matches, but it took till the 7th game to register the first win as Ronan hit a double in a 3-2 win against Aberdeen. Following a good run of games in the early months of 2022, Saints looked to once again be aiming for the top six, which resulted in speculative interest in Jim Goodwin and his coaching team, which ultimately saw the management team depart for Aberdeen following the departure of Stephen Glass. Saints appointed Stephen Robinson and Diarmuid O'Carroll from Morecambe as manager and assistant respectively. Robinson was well known in Scottish football from a successful stint as manager of Motherwell.
However, results remained inconsistent and at the league split there was still the possibility of automatic relegation. A 1-0 defeat against Hibernian in the first post-split game increased the pressure but back-to-back wins over Dundee and St Johnstone secured safety with two games remaining. Two 0-0 draws left Saints in 9th place.
The Scottish Cup had provided some excitement with a quarter final against Hearts at Tynecastle producing a stunning 30-yard strike from Conor Ronan, however it was not enough to prevent a 4-2 defeat to exit the competition.
Ronan and Eamonn Brophy shared the top scorer record over the season with 8 goals apiece.
