Season 2014-15

The end of the previous season saw the now usual clear out of players with loan stars Campbell, Newton, Magennis and Bahoken returning to their parent clubs and McGowan, Dilo, Djemba Djemba, Brady and van Zanten not having their contracts renewed.

First business of the close season was to find a new manager as the board decided that Danny Lennon had gone as far as he could with the club. The man they chose was Lennon's assistant Tommy Craig.

His first job was to rebuild the squad and he began by promoting youth players Declan Hughes, Mark Williams and Adam Brown to the top team. He secured the services of Marian Kello for a further season and added ex Hearts keeper Mark Ridgers as cover. Forwards James Marwood from Gateshead, Callum Ball from Derby County and Ross Caldwell from Hibs arrived to provide some much needed fire power up front. The loan signing was again a route that Saints looked at and Manchester City youngsters Ellis Plummer and Adam Drury were brought in on season long deals.

Some pride was restored when the Renfrewshire Cup returned to Paisley with a 1-0 win at Cappielow.

As the season got underway Saints were slow to start losing the first five league games. Isaac Osbourne (Partick Thistle) arrived to help boost the defence along with a return from Kilmarnock of former Saint Jeroen Tesselaar.

Fortunes did not improve and December arrived with Saints second bottom of the league and out of both cup competitions with just 2 wins and 2 draws in 15 league matches.

Tommy Craig was sacked and Gary Teale was installed as interim manager aided by youth coach David Longwell

January arrived and the now annual squad shake up began with Marwood, Drury, Plummer, Caldwell and Hughes departing, having had their contracts terminated. In came Yoann Arquin from Ross County, James Dayton on loan from Oldham, Alan Gow, Kieran Sadlier from West Ham, Emanualle Sonupe on loan from Spurs and Bulgarian Viktor Genev who had been playing in Kazakhstan.

Unfortunately the new players could not improve the teams fortunes and the slide to relegation continued.

In the final few matches several young players progressed from the youth system to show that there is some hope for the future.

One other highlight in an otherwise poor season was young Stevie Mallan winning the SPFL goal of the season award for a mazy solo effort in a victory at Dens Park in December.
