Season 1981-82

Season 1981-82 began in the north of Scotland and a four team tournament in Keith. Saints defeated Raith Rovers and Brechin City to take the trophy.
The competitive action started with the league cup and Saints did well to progress from a tough group containing Celtic, Hearts and St Johnstone. The quarter finals paired Saints with Forfar Athletic and after a 2-2 draw at Station Park, Saints progressed with a 6-0 win at Love Street. For the semi final it was another 2-2 draw in the first leg against Rangers, however in the 2nd leg several dubious refereeing decisions enabled Rangers to take a 2-1 victory.
The Scottish Cup also provided a semi final appearance after defeats of Morton, Clydebank and Dundee United took Saints to a meeting with Aberdeen. The tie ended 1-1 and a replay was needed at Dens Park. On a night of heavy rain, Saints twice fought back to level the scores before a goalkeeping error by Billy Thomson gifted Aberdeen a 3-2 win and ended Saints cup dreams for another season.
With the cups providing the drama for the season the league campaign went by with some consistency resulting in a 5th place finish.
