Season 1968-69

Following on from the previous season, 1968-69 began in fine style. Five wins and five draws from the first ten matches saw Saints sitting proudly in second place, the only undefeated team in the country!

That run was expected to be ended when the mighty Rangers came calling on 11th November 1968. Rangers were a team full of internationalists and no-one gave Saints a chance. St.Mirren lined up:- Connaghan, C.Murray, Connell, Fulton, McFadden, E.Murray, Adamson, Blair, Kane, Pinkerton and Gilshan.

Rangers were on top for most of the match, but Denis Connaghan was in superb form and denied them time and time again. Midway through the second half excellent play between Pinkerton and Adamson set up a chance for Hugh Gilshan to break through the Rangers defence and score the only goal of the game to extend Saints unbeaten run to 34 games.

Unfortunately the run ended the following week at Pittodrie when Aberdeen won 2-0. This result caused Saints to stumble and they only won 1 from the next six games. A minor revival over Christmas saw twelve points from seven games, but this form did not last and a horrendous run saw them fail to win any of their final fourteen competitive matches to finish eleventh.
