Season 1967-68

Season 1967-68 was to be one of Saints greatest ever seasons. Following relegation in the previous season, the team had to rebuild and that job fell to manager Alex Wright who had replaced Doug Millward in December 1966- too late to prevent relegation.

During the season Alex Wright used only 21 players, although six of them played less than five matches so the nucleus of the squad was fifteen men! The season began with the usual exit from the league cup, but when the league season began it was a different story. The first match saw Dumbarton swept aside by four goals to nil at Boghead. The rest of the season continued in similar fashion. In the 36 games Saints failed to score in just one of them, they lost only once (1-2 at East Fife) and they won 27 matches all of these facts remain as club records to this day.

There were some high scoring matches including a 7-0 defeat of Forfar, 7-1 against Stenhousemuir and 6-1 against Alloa. Top scorer for the season was Peter Kane with 25 league goals and four in cup competitions.

Following the defeat at the hands of East Fife on 4th November 1967, St.Mirren began a sequence which saw them win sixteen consecutive matches between 18th November and 30th March 1968 which is still the club record.

The run was ended by a no scoring draw against Montrose at Links Park, but the undefeated run continued until the end of the season, a total of 23 matches.

The match at Links Park was more notable for seeing the debut of a young player who several years later would be an integral part of St.Mirren’s next championship success, Jackie Copland.

The title was secured with a 1-1 draw at Love Street against nearest challengers Arbroath on the 17th April, fullback Cammy Murray scoring the important goal
