Season 1963-64

Season 1963-64 was just as poor as the previous, as after a good start to the campaign with four victories in the first five matches, including a 2-1 win over Celtic, they fell away. In ten matches leading up to the New Year they had only a solitary 3-2 win over Motherwell to compensate for eight defeats.
The next match was against Aberdeen on the 4th January at Love Street. In a return to tradition, saints played in black and white stripes for the first time in several seasons, having worn white tops since the start of the decade. Whether it was co-incidence or not Saints won comfortably 3-1 in a much improved performance which saw Gerry Queen , Tommy Robertson and Jimmy Robertson scoring.
Although Celtic won 3-0 in the next match the improvement continued for the next two matches with a 2-1 defeat of East Stirling and a magnificent 3-2 win at Ibrox, Queen, Beck and Allen scoring. Safety had been secured by this point which was just as well as in the next match Dundee won 9-2 and this was followed by three more defeats.
A new competition was played this season with the Summer Cup. But in keeping with Saints cup pedigree at this time, they did not fare well and went out at the first stage.
