Season 1959-60

1959-60 promised much with silverware in the boardroom but again failed to produce any joy. The one moment of pleasure during the year was again in the Scottish Cup. On the 30th January 1960 Saints lined up at Love Street against Glasgow University in the first round. It was Student Charity Day in Paisley but the Saints showed no charity as they scored fifteen without reply! This remains their biggest-ever victory.

Scoring honours went to Gerry Baker who claimed TEN goals before having to retire through injury with twelve minutes left! He remains the only man to have scored ten in one competitive match during the 20th Century. The other scorers on the day were Gemmell (2) Miller, McGugan and Rodger.

The team was:-  Walker, McTurk, Wilson, McGugan, Tierney, Riddell, Rodger, Bryceland, Baker, Gemmell and Miller.

Unfortunately, that is where the run ended as Celtic put Saints out in the next round, although they needed three games to do so.
