Season 1957-58

1957-58 continued in forgettable fashion. The regular exit from the League Cup was compounded by a bad injury to Tommy Bryceland during the final group match. This was to keep him out of the side for the entire season.

Another player was lost shortly after when the board accepted £8,000 to allow centre-half Willie Telfer to travel the short distance to Ibrox. This was a decision that angered a large section of the support.

However, Saints went on a five-match unbeaten run following his departure and lifted some of the gloom that had descended over the club. Unfortunately, this was the only bright spot in a poor season and six defeats in the following seven games plunged them back into the relegation zone. They were never in any real danger of going down, but another bad season ended with 13th place the best they could achieve.

The next two seasons were more of the same with the league cup and league championship producing indifferent form. However, in both seasons the Scottish Cup was to provide memories that were to remain in the history of St. Mirren forever.
