Season 1956-57

1956-57 was disappointing for the Saints with the League Cup form returning to normal with a group stage exit. The league campaign became another fight against relegation with the old habit of large victories being followed by large defeats. This was typified in October when Queens Park won 5-0 at Hampden and seven days later Queen of the South were thumped 7-1 at Love Street.
Throughout the season Saints always managed to stay just ahead of the bottom clubs and on the 13th April a 4-2 defeat of Hibernian secured their survival.
The Scottish Cup was not a success either as they struggled to get past Partick Thistle, needing three matches to see them off (1-1, 2-2, 5-1). They then scraped past Dunfermline (1-0) before losing to Celtic (1-2).
