Season 1952-53

1952-53 saw a slight improvement in recent form.

Although the first match was lost 3-2 at home to Rangers, the end of October saw Saints sitting second top of the league after a seven-match unbeaten run which included a 6-0 demolition of Queen of the South in which George Stewart scored three. A 2-1 reverse against Celtic was a mere hiccup as the next four matches were won to take Saints into top position.

But from here it was all downhill with only four wins in the final 17 matches. The slump was confirmed when East Fife inflicted a massive 7-0 defeat at the beginning of April. A final sixth position was all to show for the early season efforts.

Towards the end of the season Saints were invited to play Drumcondra on the 30th March. They lost 2-0 but had the honour of playing the first-ever floodlit match in the Republic of Ireland.
