Season 1950-51

The 1950’s began in familiar fashion with a group stage exit from the League Cup.

The League campaign wasn’t much better, as after winning the first two matches, 3-1 against Clyde and 2-0 at Brockville, they managed only two further wins in the next sixteen matches. This poor sequence left the Saints second from the bottom of the league at the turn of the year.

An upturn in fortune after the New Year saw a 1-0 victory over Hearts on the second of January, followed by five draws and then a 2-1 defeat of Third Lanark which elevated them to thirteenth.

Back-to-back defeats from Celtic and Hibs meant that they required full points from the remaining three matches to ensure survival. Fortunately, Saints had kept their best performances for last and having disposed of Airdrie (3-2) and Motherwell (3-0), Raith Rovers were beaten 2-0 to guarantee safety.
