Season 1949-50

The third match of season 1949-50 saw a League Cup encounter against Celtic at Love Street on the 20th August. 47,438 people crammed onto the terraces to see the match. This was a new attendance record for the ground which still stands today. They were entertained by some good play from both teams, with a single Johnny Deakin goal earning Saints a victory.

Unfortunately, this was the only highlight of the competition as they once again failed to progress from the group phase.

The league got off to another good start with a 3-2 victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie followed by a 2-0 home win against Stirling Albion. Just one defeat in the first nine games saw St. Mirren at the top of the League at the beginning of November but back-to-back defeats against Rangers (0-1) and Partick Thistle (0-4) saw the challenge stutter and Saints slipped down the league.

A revival over the festive period saw Aberdeen and Stirling Albion again defeated before the season deteriorated with just one win in the final thirteen matches leaving them in eleventh place.

One curious fact of the season was the top scorer with nine goals, Davie Lapsley, from his right-back position! Eight of his strikes were penalties.
