Season 1948-49

For only the second time in the competition's nine-year history, Saints progressed through the group stage of the League Cup in 1948-49. After topping the table over Aberdeen, Morton and Third Lanark, St. Mirren lined up against Rangers in the quarter-final. In a closely fought match a solitary 1st half-goal gave saw Rangers progress at the Saints' expense.
The League campaign began well with five victories from the first six matches seeing St. Mirren sitting proudly at the top of the league, equal on points with Hibernian.
Following this the inconsistencies of previous years re-emerged, and Saints fell from the title race to finish in 8th position.
Top scorer for the year was Gerry Burrell with 13 League goals and 22 in all competitions. Amazingly nine of his goals were against Greenock rivals Morton!
