Season 1947-48
1947/48 saw the League Cup being moved to the start of the season but this did nothing to improve Saints fortunes in the competition. They did manage to record their highest-ever League Cup winning margin with a 7-1 win over Queen of the South at Love Street on the 6th August.
This was scant reward, however, for their record League Cup defeat just three weeks earlier, when Queens thumped them 8-1 at Palmerston.
The league campaign saw a slight improvement from recent years with a 5th place finish being gained.
The Scottish Cup also saw a high-scoring match when non-league Shawfield came to Love Street and left on the wrong end of an 8-0 defeat.
Victories over East Stirling (2-0) and Clyde (2-1) saw a match against Hibernian who lined up with former St. Mirren hero Alex Linwood at Centre Forward. Linwood was to show no compassion to his former employers with two goals in a 3-1 victory for Hibs.
