Season 1938-39

1938-39 was not a good year for St.Mirren. It took until the seventh game for them to record their first victory, a 2-1 defeat of Queens Park. A 3-1 win over Raith Rovers in the next match lifted Saints off the bottom of the table and spurred a mini revival with nine points from 7 games.

Best performance was a 4-0 win over St.Johnstone with McLintock and Rankin both scoring twice.
The New Year brought another slump in fortune and saw Saints edging closer to the relegation positions.

By the end of February they were only four points clear of second bottom Albion Rovers and a disastrous spell where five matches were lost from six meant that they entered the last two matches requiring three points to ensure survival.
A 3-2 win at Somerset Park took Saints into a meeting with Celtic at Love Street still needing a point for safety.

Things started badly, with Celtic ahead at the interval, but second half goals from McLintock and Knox, finally secured a 2-1 victory and first division football for another season.
