Season 1935-36

Relegation in 1934/35 brought much change to St.Mirren Football Club.
Unrest had been growing amongst supporters for some time concerning the direction the club was moving, and at the AGM, the entire Board of Directors resigned and were replaced by a new Board with James Adam as Chairman.

On the pitch, the same players who had been relegated the previous season were charged with the task of returning the club to the top flight and restoring some pride.
The only change in personnel was the new left wing partnership of William Gall and Patrick McCammon, who took their places in what was to become one of the finest front lines in the clubs history:- Latimer, Knox, McGregor, McCamon and Gall.

These five men were to score a total of 98 goals between them in 34 league matches as Saints scored 114 times, a record that stands to this day and will probably remain for some time to come!

Leading the scoring was centre forward Jimmy McGregor with 40 goals, ably assisted by Jimmy Knox with 31.

The season had started well with twelve victories in the first fourteen matches, which saw them well positioned at the top of the league. However, two defeats in the next three saw Falkirk takeover top spot, following a massive 5-0 defeat for Saints at Brockville.

This was just a minor setback as Jimmy McGregor found his scoring touch with 4 goals in a 6-2 win over Dundee United and then 5 in a 6-0 win over Forfar. Jimmy Knox was to get in on the action as well with 2 in three consecutive matches against East Fife (3-1), Stenhousemuir (3-1) and Edinburgh City (5-0).
Knox was to play a major part in an 8-1 victory over Kings Park on the 7th of March as he netted four times. His 1st goal that day marked his 100th competitive goal in the stripes and his 4th (Saints 7th) was Saints 100th of the league campaign.

Promotion was secured in a 7-0 thrashing of Brechin City on 21st March with Knox scoring another hat trick.

Unfortunately, two back to back 2-0 defeats against St.Bernards and Falkirk saw the title dreams fade and Falkirk crowned champions.
