Season 1934-35
After the low of the previous season’s cup final, Saints struggled to regain any form for 1934-35 and in the first 23 matches of the league campaign; they managed just three wins and three draws, to lie at the foot of the table at New Year.
The only highlight of this period was an 8-0 thrashing of bitter rivals Morton, in a delayed Renfrewshire Cup final.
The New Year did bring some respite, with a run of five victories in ten games taking them into the final three matches still with a slim chance of avoiding the drop.
The first two matches were won, 3-0 against Dunfermline and 2-1 over Partick Thistle, leading to a final day match at Parkhead which Saints had to win, while hoping that Ayr United lost at Airdrie.
Airdrie did Saints a big favour with a 3-2 victory, but Jimmy Knox missed a penalty as Saints slumped to a 2-1 defeat and relegation for the first time in their history!
