Season 1933-34

Unlike the previous season, 1933-34 did not start well at all with an opening day 6-0 mauling at Hearts followed by another four defeats in the first eight matches.
The first win was in the ninth game against Falkirk (3-1) but was followed by more poor displays which saw four defeats from five games before a massive 7-2 victory over Third Lanark with James Smith netting a hat-trick.
Just one more victory from the next seven games saw Saints bottom of the league during December.
The New Year arrived and brought a dramatic upturn in fortune, which carried them up the table away from relegation.
In true Saints style they ended the season as they began, with a 6-0 thrashing, this time at the hands of relegated Cowdenbeath.
The improvement in form coincided with the Scottish Cup campaign which saw Penicuik Athletic (2-2, 4-1), Brechin (4-0) and Celtic (2-0) all swept aside to take Saints to a semi-final against Motherwell at Tynecastle. Much fancied Motherwell were expected to go through, but a superb hat-trick from Jimmy Knox earned a 3-1 victory and a final against Rangers.
The least said about the final as far as St.Mirren are concerned, the better, as Rangers won comfortably, 5-0!
