Season 1932-33
1932-33 began well, with Jimmy Knox continuing in scoring form, with both goals in a 2-0 defeat of Rangers at Love Street, one of just two matches Rangers were to lose all year!
Two more victories followed over Falkirk and Third Lanark which saw Saints top of the league.
This position was not maintained, but they did keep pace with the top sides with some impressive performances including back to back 3-1 wins over Celtic and Third Lanark followed by a 7-1 demolition of Cowdenbeath, with Davie McCrae resuming normal service with six goals.
However eight defeats in thirteen games between Christmas and February saw the challenge end.
Only bright spot of this period was another 7-1 victory, this time over Airdrie, with McCrae netting a hat-trick on his way to re-claiming the top scorer title with 29 goals as Saints finished in 7th position. This was the eighth time that Davie had finished as top scorer, and he remains the only man to have achieved this. His total of 221 league goals is also a club record that remains today.
It was a huge loss to the club when he left for New Brighton at the end of this season.
