Season 1927-28
1927-28 started in similar style to the previous season, with four wins and a draw from the first five matches.
The fifth match of this sequence saw centre half, Willie Summers, a hero of the Cup winning team, in outstanding form, to lead the team to a 4-3 victory over Raith, after being 3-2 down at half time!
Willie had been a great servant to St.Mirren since signing in 1921 and it came as a shock to everyone when he was sold to Bradford just days after this match!
The loss of Summers was to expose a severe lack of leadership and tactical awareness in the team and they once again, slipped from the title race.
Davie McCrae did his best to rescue the season with 32 goals, his best ever performance, but a final placing of fifth was all Saints could manage after such a promising start.
A second piece of boardroom madness was to end the Scottish Cup campaign this season as well. After defeating Clyde (6-1) and Vale of Atholl (5-1) the board took the amazing decision to sell influential wing half Tom Morrison to Liverpool, just days before the third round. Without Morrison’s influence on the park, Partick Thistle thrashed Saints 5-0!
Towards the end of this season, John Cochrane left to join Sunderland and was replaced by Partick Thistle assistant Manager, Donald Turner.
