Season 1926-27

With the Scottish Cup sitting proudly in the boardroom, 1926-27 began in confident mood with six wins from the first seven matches.

This run was brought to a shuddering halt at home to Rangers on 2nd October with a 7-3 mauling! They did bounce back a fortnight later and defeated Celtic 3-1, but all of the inconsistency of the 1910’s was to re-emerge, and big wins over Dunfermline (4-0) and Motherwell (5-1) were countered by losses to Celtic (6-2) and Cowdenbeath (5-1).

The return match against Rangers at Ibrox on the twelfth of February was met with some trepidation. This fear was justified, as Rangers won comfortably, 4-0! This match has a significant place in Saints history as being the first match involving them to be broadcast live on the radio!

Rangers were to take their goals for total over Saints to seventeen, when they ended the defence of the Scottish Cup with a 6-0 victory at Ibrox in round two.

Come seasons end, Saints had slipped to tenth, their lowest position for a number of years.

The positives from the season were the winning of both local competitions and the reserve team defeating Aberdeen 3-0 in the final of the 2nd XI cup.
