Season 1923-24

1923-24 was once again a fairly consistent season with another sixth place finish achieved. It could have been improved had they found a successor to Dunky Walker who had left for Nottingham Forest during the close season.

They tried several players at centre forward throughout the year, but could not find the solution. The long term answer was to come in unusual circumstances!

The first round of the Scottish Cup paired Saints with non-league Beith at Love Street. With the memories of 1921 fresh in mind Beith were treated with a bit more respect, which was just as well as they more than matched Saints for the whole match and a narrow 3-2 victory was more than welcome. The second Beith goal that day, regarded by most as the best of the match, was scored by a young chauffeur from Bridge of Weir.

This goal and his overall performance so impressed the St.Mirren management, that they signed him a few days later. He made his debut against Hibernian at the start of April and scored his first goal for the club in his third match, the only goal in a victory at Parkhead. He would go onto to score a total of three goals in five matches before the end of the season.

The first of many he would score for Saints that would make him a legend in Paisley. His name-Davie McCrae!
