Season 1920-21

After the mediocre performances during the previous decade, St. Mirren entered the 1920’s with the hope of better to come!

What a disappointment they were to face in the first season!

1920-21 was arguably the worst season in the clubs history to date and remains so to this day!

It all began with a 2-2 draw against Queens Park.

What followed is probably best forgotten by Saints fans. Nine defeats in the next ten matches saw them slide towards the bottom of the league. Some respite was achieved in the next group of matches with five wins from ten games to secure a mid-table position at that point.

From here it all went horribly wrong! In the final 21 league matches Saints could manage just six points and slumped to the bottom of the league. Come seasons end they remained bottom, with seven wins from 42 matches. They lost 31 games which was, and still is, a record for any team in the old First Division. Not one to be proud of!

Fortunately, at this time there was only one senior league in Scotland, so there was no relegation for Saints.

The season was summed up in the Scottish Cup. The first round saw non-league Armadale visit Love Street. Everyone expected an easy home win and that was enhanced when Saints took an early lead. However, Armadale were showing much more desire to equalise, and although Saints were to regain the lead the non-leaguers eventually ran out 3-2 winners.

There was, however, a couple of good thing to come out of the season that may not have been well known. The reserve team won the Scottish Alliance league and two players arrived at Love Street who were to become legends over the coming seasons:- Dunky Walker and Jock Bradford!
