Season 1913-14

1913-14 was a season of mixed fortune. A poor start to the campaign saw one draw and three defeats in the first four matches. In the fifth match, keeper Willie O’Hagan was the hero as he defied Celtic time and again and provided the opportunity for the team to get forward and score twice without reply. This was the first time that Celtic had lost at home by two goals since 1903 and was also the only defeat they suffered all season!

This match obviously had a positive effect on Saints as they won five of their next seven matches. However there followed a massive slump in form and fourteen matches without victory sent Saints tumbling to the bottom of the league. After the New Year they only managed 2 victories in eighteen games and remained bottom, for the second time in three years. Re-election was once again sought successfully.

The Scottish Cup did provide some respite from the horrors of the league campaign. Saints reached the semi-final after defeating Caledonian (5-1), Dundee (2-1), Aberdeen (2-1) and Partick Thistle (1-0).

There the revival ended as Saints reverted back to their League form and were soundly beaten 3-1 by Hibs at Tynecastle.
