Season 1907-08

1907-08 was to be Saints best season in their short history. The league campaign started well, with three victories and this run was to stretch into eleven unbeaten matches. A mid season slump however, ended any thoughts of winning the championship. They did manage a late revival to coincide with the Scottish Cup and this led to another semi final appearance.
Having disposed of Third Lanark, Motherwell and Hearts they faced Kilmarnock in the semi.
With memories still fresh of four previous semi final defeats they set out to take the final step.
The match at Rugby Park ended in a 0-0 draw with the credit going to both goalkeepers who each saved a penalty.
So it was onto Love Street and the replay. Once again a close match was witnessed, but two late Wylie goals were enough to see St.Mirren progress to their first ever Scottish Cup final.
On the 18th April 1908 the following men lined up for Saints in the biggest match of the clubs history to date: -
Grant, Gordon, White, Key, Robertson, McAvoy, Clements, Cunningham, Wylie, Paton and Anderson.
Unfortunately in the final they met old cup adversaries Celtic who proved far too strong and ran out comfortable 5-1 winners. Cunningham scored Saints only goal.
