The wrong strips

During Saints championship winning campaign in season 1999-2000, there was a bizarre incident when they were forced to play a match wearing the tops of their bitter rivals.
Someone in the Saints camp packed the clubs red away kit for a match against Clydebank, who were playing at Morton’s Cappielow Park.
Unfortunately, Bankies were also wearing red tops and as saints were the away team the onus was on them to change kit!
However, no-one had thought to pack the stripes and the only solution Saints could find was to don the yellow tops of deadly rivals Morton!
The players took the park to a stunned silence followed by a chorus of boos as loyal fans realised what was happening.
Whether it was embarrassment at wearing the tops or not, the team put in a well below par performance and could only manage a 0-0 draw with a very poor Clydebank side!

This was not the first time that St.Mirren have had to wear the strip of a rival as in a Scottish Cup match in 1961, they travelled to Tannadice to play Dundee United. A clash of colours forced Saints to travel along the road to borrow the kit of United’s city rivals Dundee. This did not deter Saints and they recorded a 1-0 victory.

More recently, and a little less noticeable, was a match at Ibrox where the referee made Saints change the colour of their socks. Having no spare ones with them, they had to borrow a set from hosts, Rangers, complete with Rangers crest!

The match was lost 7-1!

A change of socks was also the order of the day during Saints championship winning season in 2005-06, when Hamilton Accies arrived at Love Street to have the referee order them to change their socks. Having no spare colour they were forced to borrow a set of black Saints socks, complete with SMFC down the sides!!

There has also been an occasion where Saints strips were on show during a Scottish Cup match not involving Saints!
On the 27th February 1960 Airdrieonians travelled to Somerset Park to play Ayr United. Both clubs wore white tops and the SFA ordered them BOTH to wear their change strips. However, again there was a clash as BOTH teams had blue change strips, so Ayr United had to wear Saints shirts!
