The Paisley Charity Cup was first
competed for in 1882-83, when St.Mirren reached the final only to lose 0-6 to Paisley Athletic. It was not until 1887 that Saints first got their name on the trophy, when they defeated Thornliebank 5-1 at Westmarch
on the 28th May. The victorious team was:- Cameron, Maxwell, McHardie, Hutchison,
Cheyne, Graham, Harper, Fairlie, Morton, Bain, Brown. Fairlie and Morton both scored two goals. Saints had several more successes during the following years; one of the most pleasing was a 10-0 thrashing of rivals
Abercorn in 1894. By the turn of the century, St.Mirren and Abercorn were the
only senior clubs remaining in the town, so Arthurlie and Johnstone were invited to compete in the competition. With the demise of Abercorn in 1920, it was decided that the competition should be played as a one off match between
Saints and invited opposition. Over the years teams such as Third Lanark,
Clyde, Partick Thistle, Morton, Kilmarnock and East Fife along with English teams like Manchester City, Leicester City, Barnsley
and Preston North End have provided the opposition. Saints have won the trophy outright on 39
occasions and have drawn on a further six. The final year of competition was
in 1967 and the trophy now resides in the Love Street Boardroom.
