The start of the 1970’s was not a very successful period in the history
of St.Mirren.
1970-71 saw relegation for the second time in four seasons. This was despite having players of the calibre of Archie
Knox, Gordon McQueen, Iain Munro and Bobby McKean in their ranks. At the end of a poor season, they could only manage 7 victories
in 34 matches they finished in 17th position
This season also saw a change in manager when Wilson Humphries, who had played for saints during the fifties, arrived
to replace Alex Wright who left for Dunfermline Athletic.
