The Renfrewshire Cup was first competed for in season 1879-80, when Thornliebank emerged as winners. At this point there was not actually a trophy to be presented as no one had thought to get one made!
During the early years as many as 18-20 clubs competed in the competition.

St.Mirren first competed in season1880-81, when they made it to the final, but lost 3-1 to Arthurlie.

The team for this match was:-
Burgess, Fisher, Allison, Paterson, Arrol, Muir, Drinnan, Davis, Wallace, Gorman, Goold.

Goalscorer was Goold.

They had only to wait until season 1882-83 for their first success in the competition, when they defeated Thornliebank 3-1, with this team:-

Drinnan, Marshall, McPhee, Paterson, Kerr, Wallace, Watt, Fairlie, Imrie, Johnstone, Brown.
 Scorers were: Wallace2, Imrie.

For the first time this season a trophy was presented to the winning team.

Over the following years many teams fell away from the senior game, and the by 1920’s, only two senior clubs remained- St.Mirren and Greenock Morton.
The format for the competition was that Saints and Morton would play the finalists of the Victoria Cup competition for a place in the final. This meant that Saints and Morton were, more often than not, competing in the finals. This is proven by the list of winners with these two well out in front in terms of number of victories.
The 1990's was not a good period for the competition with first saints withdrawing for a few years in the early part of the decade and then in the late 1990's,  Morton chairman Hugh Scott took the decision to withdraw the club from the Renfrewshire FA thus making them ineligible for the competition. He claimed that this was due to boundary changes, with Greenock no longer included in Renfrewshire.
Over the following few years St.Mirren competed against the winners of the Renfrewshire Victoria cup for the Renfrewshire Cup.
In 2003 Morton, under new ownership were re-instated to the Renfrewshire FA and again competed in the competition.
The two clubs agreed to make the Renfrewshire Cup a pre season match alternating between Love Street and Cappielow and there has been an increase in the interest generated by the competition.
At the beginning of season 2010-11 St.Mirren claimed their fifth consecutive victory, with a penalty win at Cappielow.
This win edged Saints ahead 52-51 in the overall totals.

The Renfrewshire Cup has a large place in the history of St.Mirren and will hopefully continue to play a part in the future.
