1951-52

1951-52

The following season was more of the same with an early League Cup exit and another relegation battle.

The League Cup did provide one highlight when Hearts came to Love Street. Saints quickly found themselves 3-1 down but managed to pull level at 3-3 before the break. Early in the second half, Hearts increased their lead with two quick goals, but again Saints came back and equalised just before the end. Right on the final whistle Saints had a blatant penalty appeal turned down by referee Jack Mowat, thus ensuring an incredible 5-all draw.

A horrific run of injuries saw league form slump and St.Mirren caught up in a relegation struggle. A run of twelve matches which saw only two wins saw Saints near the foot of the table going into a match against fellow strugglers Stirling Albion.

A good 3-0 victory gave hope of a climb up the table, but this was short lived as five defeats in the next six games meant that, once again they had to win their final two games and hope that Morton lost theirs, to stay up.

St.Mirren again kept the best till last and defeated Queen of the South and Celtic. Unfortunately Morton’s final match was delayed, and Saints had a months wait to determine their future. Thankfully Motherwell won the match 2-0 to see Morton relegated.

St.Mirren celebrated by defeating Grimsby 4-3 to win the Paisley Charity Cup.
