1941-42

1941-42

Prior to the start of 1941-42, saints lost a young forward, Billy Steel, to local rivals Morton. At the time an insignificant occurrence as he had made only sixteen appearances in the stripes over three seasons, but in time he was to win 30 caps for Scotland and represent Great Britain in a match against the Rest of the World. Definitely a case of ‘one who got away’!

The season itself saw some high scoring matches, unfortunately most against Saints!

A Brady hat trick inspired a 5-3 win over Hamilton, which was followed by an 8-1 thrashing at Ibrox! Other big wins, 7-2 over Airdrie and 5-2 over Motherwell being cancelled 8-2 and 5-0 by Hearts and Morton!

In cup competition, Saints were not successful either.

The Summer Cup saw a first round defeat at the hands of Hearts, and in the War League Cup they failed to progress past the initial group stage.

One piece of silverware did arrive in Paisley when the Renfrewshire Cup was won with a 4-1 victory over Morton in the delayed 1940-41 final. However, the trophy was only to remain at Love Street for a mere eight months as in May Morton reclaimed it with a 5-1 victory!
