League Cup

Trophies/LeagueCup.jpg

The League Cup was first played for in season 1945-46, following the format of the War league Cup which had been played for during the Second World War, with a group stage followed by knockout rounds to the final.St.Mirren played their first match in the new competition against Rangers at Ibrox on the 21st September 1946. This match was to set the pattern for Saints participation in the competition as they lost 0-4! That result summed up Saints fortunes in the league cup as in over thirty years of the group format they only progressed through the group on four occasions. From the early eighties, the competition has changed to a straight knock-out competition, but this has not enhanced Saints success.

Best seasons in the competition were 1955-56 and 2009-10 when they were beaten finalists.

Apart from those two seasons the league cup is almost completely forgettable in Saints’ history, and the only other seasons worth a mention are three semi final appearances:-
06/10/1971 Celtic Hampden Park 0-3
07/10/1981 Rangers Love Street 2-2 McAvennie, Scanlon
28/10/1981 Rangers Ibrox 1-2 Scanlon
06/02/2001 Kilmarnock Hampden Park 0-3

One final League Cup match that rates a mention is a match at Ibrox on the 23/08/1972. Rangers scored early through Alfie Conn. Everyone expected a thrashing and they got it…..or Rangers got it!

Step forward Ally McLeod. The Saints striker netted four goals without reply to record a memorable victory and remains the only player to score four goals at Ibrox against Rangers!
