Over the years St. Mirren have had 28 players capped for the Scottish national team while at the club.
The
first Saints players were Andrew Brown and James 'Daddy' Dunlop who were capped against Wales on the 22nd March 1890.
Most capped are
Billy Thomson and Iain Munro with seven caps each.
The most capped Scottish
player to play for the Saints is Roy Aitken who gained 57 caps during his career, although only one of those was whilst at
Love Street.
Only one St.Mirren player has had the honour
of captaining his country and that was back in 1905 when Thomas Jackson skippered the team against Wales in Wrexham.
Two
players have scored for Scotland. Bobby Rankine with two goals leads the
way from Tommy Gemmell with one.
It must also be noted
that Saints have had the services of players of the calibre of Archie Gemmill, Steve Clarke, Frank McAvennie, Gordon McQueen,
Paul Lambert, Jimmy Cowan and Ian Ferguson who all played for
Scotland after leaving Love Street, and Steve Archibald who won his caps prior to arriving at Love Street.
Saints have also had several young players have been picked for the Scotland U-21 teams since they were introduced
in 1976, and for the Scottish League side.
There
are also a few foreign players to have worn the stripes, but never won any caps whilst at the club including:- Victor
Munoz(Spain), Gerry Baker(USA), Christopher
Wreh(Liberia), Chris Birchall(Trinidad
and Tobago) and Junior Mendes(Montserrat)
The
most capped player ever to wear the stripes is Mo Camara, who won 79 caps for Guinea prior to signing for Saints.
