Sponsorship
Sponsorship has been a major
part in football for the past few years and shirt sponsors are a vital
part of all clubs finances.
Over the years St.Mirren have
had several shirt sponsors.
The first name to be emblazoned on the strips was Grahams Buses a local
bus company that served the Paisley area. Their sponsorship lasted from
1983 until 1987, making them the longest shirt sponsor in Saints
history.
They were followed by Clydeside
Scottish, at the time one of the main coach companies in the West of
Scotland, who took over in time for the 1987 Scottish Cup Final and
remained until 1989.
1989-1991 saw Kelvin Home, a
building firm take over.
The next six years saw an
association with the motor trade with four different garages becoming
main sponsors, Ingram Volkswagen (1992-92), Clanford Ford (1993-95),
Phoenix Honda (1995-97) and Phoenix Mitsubishi (1997-98).
1998-99 saw return to the bus
industry with Arriva Scotland who are part of one of the main bus, coach
and train operators in the UK. Ironically they were to buy out previous
sponsors Clydeside!
For the 1999-2000 season Saints
went international with Malaysian manufacturing company Cetco displayed
on the shirts.
As we entered the new millennium Saints signed
their best deal yet with one of the most popular Van companies LDV.
Their sponsorship ran from 2000-01 to 2002-03.
For 2003-04, They returned to
the motor trade with Phoenix Car Company becoming shirt sponsors for the
next two years. In a break with tradition, the sponsorship was shared
between two franchises, with the home tops displaying Phoenix Kia and
the away tops Phoenix Suzuki.
