St.Mirren v Greenock Morton

 All teams have a rival,
That one team they love to beat!
In Saints case it is

Greenock Morton

They first met competitively in the Renfrewshire Cup of 1884-85 when Morton were victorious by 4-3. Since then they have met on over two hundred occasions.

The Renfrewshire Cup was a constant battleground between the sides and the trophy was to travel the road between Paisley and Greenock on many occasions. To date Saints have won it over forty five times with Morton a couple fewer!

Over the seasons there have been many memorable matches, not all for football reasons! One such match was a friendly played at Cappielow on the eleventh of March 1890. The final score was 1-1, but this match is remembered for being played on a pitch illuminated by patent oil lamps! Who said that floodlighting was a twentieth century invention?!

There have been 190 National meetings between the teams with Saints ahead with 79 victories against Morton’s 68. These meetings have brought great joy and deep despair to fans of both teams, with long periods of success and failure.

Saints most successful period was from 1980-81 until 1996-97 when they won 28 and drew seven of forty one matches. This included a record of fifteen consecutive matches at Cappielow without defeat between 1983 and 1997. A massive fourteen years!

Worst period was between 1908 and 1922 when they won just three times in thirty matches!

Biggest victory was at Love Street on the 5th of February 1938 when they won seven-nil in a First Division match

Heaviest defeat was a Southern League match at Cappielow on New Years Day 1943 when Morton scraped home 8-0! Fortunately for Saints this result is rarely quoted as it occurred during ‘War-time’ regulations! The official peace time record is 1-6 in a League Cup match at Cappielow on 19/10/1946!
