Tony Fitzpatrick played his first match for St Mirren, on the 29th July 1973, against Hibernian in the Dryborough Cup. During season 74-75, Tony established himself as a first team regular, scoring his first goal against Meadowbank. At the start of season 75-76 he was made club captain. 
One highlight of his career was being named "Man-of-the-Match" against Liverpool in St Mirren's centenary match. He also had the honour of being named in Ally MacLeod's forty man pool of players for the 1978 World Cup. In July 1979 he signed for Bristol City for £235,000. He played in the City team for the first leg of the 1980 ASC final but missed out on the return at Love Street through injury, before returning to St.Mirren two years later for £150,000.
In the next few seasons Tony helped St Mirren reach two Scottish Cup semi-finals and one League Cup semi-final before playing in the Cup winning team of 1987.

Between seasons 84-85 and 87-88 Tony was dogged with injuries and decided to retire during season 88-89. In total Tony made 536 appearances for St Mirren, 28 as a substitute, and scored 35 goals.
Tony was also manager of the Saints on two occasions, between 1988-91  and  1996 to 1998.
