Ian Ferguson signed for Saints from Clyde, in September 1986, for £60,000
He made his debut against Hibs at Easter Road, on 13th Sept. and made an
immediate impact by coring the only goal of the game!
He quickly earned a reputation as a hard tackling midfielder, who could get
forward to support attacks.
He never played a full season for Saints, leaving in February 1988, but has a
place in St.Mirren folklore due to one moment of magic!
16th May 1987,
Hampden
Park, Fergie was to score the winner in the Scottish Cup final against Dundee United
and became a legend in that instant.
With European football the following season, great things were expected from him
but he was to quickly turn from hero to villain with a very public statement of
intent to sign for Rangers, which led to a slump in his form and much abuse from
sections of the support.
Eventually in February 1988 Rangers paid £850,000 to take him to Ibrox.
In his time at love Street, he played 72 matches and scored 12 goals.
Memories of Fergie will always be bittersweet at Love Street. No-one will forget his Hampden goal, but few will forget what
followed!
