David Lapsley, captain of the 1959 cup winning side, was signed by then manager Bobby Rankine in 1946. He made his club debut in a 4-0 defeat by Partick Thistle on the 4th September 1946. Davie actually started out as a forward but became the clubs right back after stepping in for one game. It was as a tough tackling full back that he made his reputation. Although he had earlier been known as a bit of a marksman scoring four against Hamilton at home.

For two successive seasons he was top goalscorer with 27 goals collectively, mostly from free kicks and penalties. Unfortunately he and Rangers legend George Young both peaked at the same time and Davie never won a full international cap, although he did twice represent the Scottish League. The highlight of his 13 year career is of course the 1959 cup victory. Not for them the luxury of getting away from things. Manager Willie Reid had the players meet at Love Street on the day of the final. In his whole career he claims that only one player, Derek Hogg of Leicester City, could beat him for pace.
