On 12th June 1951 Tommy Gemmell agreed to join St Mirren form junior club
Irvine Meadow. He made a scoring debut in a 3-3 draw with East Fife at Methil
on 20th October 1952. Often referred to as the "quiet man" Tommy was
widely respected for his vision and his unruffled approach to the game. He
spent all his senior career with St Mirren, being freed in 1962. He played for
Scotland against Portugal and Yugoslavia in 1955 and also won a Scottish
League Cap as well as a B International cap.
He was also instrumental in St Mirren reaching the League Cup final of
1955-56 scoring 3 goals against Motherwell in the semi final. He was to go one
better in 1959 as part of the Scottish Cup winning team. As possessor of
a marvellously sunny and equable temperament, came up smiling after many a
bruising encounter with tormented opponents. Specialised in ball control and
prompting, and could see moves ahead. Tommy is St.Mirren's top post war
competetive goalscorer with 94 goals.
