Richard Hunter

Date of Birth:

Birthplace:

Richard Hunter signed for St.Mirren in 1888 from Dumbarton, making his debut at left back against Dykebar in the Scottish Cup.

He kept his place for the next weeks match against Hearts and his performance in the 2-0 win earned him great reviews. He became a regular in the team for the rest of the season and his performances led to a call up to the Renfrewshire side to face the East of Scotland. This was to be Richard Hunters best performance of the season as he played his part in a 5-1 victory for Renfrewshire.

Further county honours were to come his way against Liverpool in October 1889 and Dunbartonshire in February 1890, both matches being won. (5-1 and 7-3 respectively)

His finest honour was to arrive during March 1890 when he was picked to play for Scotland against Ireland in a 4-1 victory.

He was part of St.Mirren’s first ever league campaign in 1890 playing in the first few matches of the season. Unfortunately his business interests were to severely disrupt his playing career and he played irregularly between the end of that first season and the beginning of the next. He left the club during the latter part of season 1891-92 and rejoined Dumbarton for a short period.
