Date of Birth:

7 Aug 1969

Paul Lambert was signed by St Mirren in August 1985 from Linwood Rangers BC. He made his first appearance in St Mirren colours when he came on for Gardner Speirs in a 1-1 pre-season friendly at Dumbarton on 6th August 1985 and his league debut came the following April at Fir Park when he came on in place of Jim Rooney and provided the cross from which Brian Gallagher scored the winning goal.

Even at this early age, Paul's skillful midfield play was already receiving recognition and in October 1985 he captained the Scotland Under-16 side against Iceland scoring his side's first goal. He graduated to the Under-21 side for whom he made 11 appearances. It was in the 1986-87 Scottish Cup campaign that Paul enjoyed his first spell as a regular first team St Mirren player. He played in all of the ties and shared in the celebrations as the Saints defeated Dundee Utd at Hampden. Inevitably his outstanding performances attracted the attention of other clubs and, with St Mirren's relegation from the Premier Division in 1992, it became increasingly likely that he would move on. In September 1993 he moved to Motherwell for £250,000. Incredibly he had already rejected a £450,000 move to Dundee Utd weeks earlier.

Went on to play in the Borussia Dortmund team who won the Champions League in 1997.
