Kenny signed for Saints on 22 September 1984, in a deal which saw Alan Logan join
Partick Thistle, and he went straight into the squad for that days match against
Celtic, coming off the bench for his debut.
His first goal came on 10 November 1984 against Hearts at Love Street in a 3-2 defeat.
Kenny, or the 'Mad Monk' as he was affectionately known because of his receding hairline and combative play, went on to score three goals that season.
Over the following eight seasons, Kenny was a regular and consistent performer
in the Saints midfield, clocking up 202 starts and 89 sub. appearances,
including the 1987 Scottish Cup Final. He scored a total of 44 goals.
Unfortunately he was forced to retire through injury in 1993 and joined the
coaching staff at Love Street.
His most famous match was at Ibrox on 12 August 1989. Rangers had unfurled the previous
seasons championship flag and were strong favourites to win easily, but Kenny
had other ideas and rose above keeper Chris Woods to score the only goal of the
match to give Saints an amazing victory. This goal was hotly disputed for a long
time after by Rangers as they claimed he had charged Woods out of the
way. Television and newspaper pictures were to show clearly that Woods' foot was
still on the ground and Kenny had made clear contact with the ball. Not that Saints fans were in any doubt!
Kenny was honoured with a testimonial in 1996 after twelve years service to the
club.
