Jimmy Knox made his St Mirren debut on 8th August 1931. During his first season he scored 25 goals nine of them coming in the last five games. The next season standing 5'10" and weighing 12 stone he scored 18 goals. A knee injury saw him miss most of season 1933-34 and he was in a relegated side in season 1934-35 scoring eleven times. Season 35-36 saw Knox score 31 times, including 3 hat-tricks and one four goal match against King's Park (8-1). Season 36-37 saw him score 19 goals. He managed to score five twice, once against Albion Rovers (6-2) and once against Queen of the South (6-2) against whom he scored four in fifteen minutes.
In season 37-38 he scored 14 in the league. Against Clyde (6-1) on Christmas Day he missed a penalty then scored a 35-yard free-kick. His final season saw him score fifteen league goals.
One story of his shooting prowess tells how, his shot beat the goalie, tore a hole in the net, soared out of the ground into a nearby slaughterhouse and killed a bull. Maybe not completely true but he certainly had one of the hardest shots ever.
