Jim Clunie first signed for St.Mirren in 1960 after playing against them in the 1955 league cup and the 1959 Scottish Cup finals for Aberdeen.
He had begun his playing career at Raith Rovers as a teenager, before moving to Pittodrie in 1953.
He was named player of the year in his first season at Love Street and went on to play in the 1962 cup final defeat by Rangers.

He was capped by the Scottish league against the league of Ireland in 1965, before leaving to join Bury. He returned for a short spell in 1966 and played his part in history by being the first player to be officially substituted in Scotland, when he was replaced by Archie Gemmill in a League Cup tie at Love Street.

After a spell in Northern Ireland, he moved into management as assistant to Lawrie McMenemy at Grimsby, winning the 4th Division title in 1972-73 before the duo moved onto Southampton where they won the FA Cup in 1976.

He returned to Love Street in 1978 as manager to succeed Alex Ferguson. He led Saints to third place in the league and victory in the Anglo Scottish Cup in 1979-80, and into Europe for the first time in 1980-81
 He was sacked in November 1981 the day after a 2-1 victory at Parkhead!
