Ian Cameron signed an S-Form at Love
Street in 1983 and quickly made his debut against Clydebank at Kilbowie on the
7th September that year, as a substitute. His first start came three days later
at Love Street in a Premier League match against Dundee. He scored his first goal for the club in
a League Cup match at Love Street (22/08/84) against Clyde. His appearances in the top team were
limited over his first three seasons at love Street, but by the start of 1986-87
he was ready to stake his claim for a place. He played participated in 35
matches during that campaign (23 starts) and performed well, either in midfield
or on the left wing. Highlight of the year was playing in the
successful Scottish Cup campaign. It was from his cross in the semi final that
Frank McGarvey netted the winning goal to set up a final appearance against
Dundee United. Saturday 16th May 1987 will long be
remembered by Ian Cameron! In the morning he was sitting University final exams
and in the afternoon he was on the subs bench at Hampden as Saints defeated
United 1-0 to secure the trophy. It could have been 2-0 had Billy Thomson not
managed to superbly tip Ian’s curling, 25 yard shot over the bar in the dying
minutes. During 1987-88 he missed only three
matches and scored eight goals. He was also responsible for setting up many more
with his accurate crossing from the left. 1988-89 was a bit more inconsistent by
Ian’s own standard, but it did not deter Aberdeen splashing £275,000 for his
services in August 1989. In his six years at Love Street he made 101 starts and 37 sub appearances. He scored 19 goals. | ||||||||||||
