Iain Munro's first spell as a St Mirren player ran from season 69-70 until season 72-73. He made his debut against Clyde on 17th January 1970. May, 1973 saw Iain sign for Hibernian, then in 1976, he joined Rangers. Iain Munro was to begin his second spell at Love Street with an appearance against Notts County on 1st November 1977. Season 78-79 saw Iain named as the clubs "Player of the Year" and in June 1979 he played for Scotland against Argentina.

He would go on to play seven times for Scotland (Argentina and Norway 1979, Peru, Austria, Belgium, Wales and England 1980). In the summer of 1980 after St Mirren had won the Anglo-Scottish Cup, Iain moved to Stoke City after a dispute with the club.  Iain made a total of 282 appearances for St Mirren, four as a substitute, and scored 28 goals, many from the penalty spot.

He was manager of Hamilton Academicals ,when it looked like a return to Love Street was on when he was announced as successor to Jimmy Bone as manager on Monday 9th  September 1996. He was due to report to Love Street on Wednesday 11th September, but a phone call from his lawyer, Jock Brown the night before indicated that Iain would not be fulfilling his appointment and Munro took over the managers job at Raith Rovers, making his stay of 24 hours the shortest managerial appointment in Scottish Football history! Ironically the man he took over from at Kirkcaldy, Tommy McLean' had set the previous record only the day before, being in the Raith 'hot-seat' a mere seven days!
