Birthplace:

Glasgow

First Match:

02/08/2003 v Queens Park, League Challenge Cup

Gus McPherson joined Glasgow Rangers straight from school and spent four seasons at Ibrox. However in the big spending era at the club he never managed a first team start and, after a spell on loan at Exeter City during 1990 he left Ibrox for Kilmarnock in February 1991.

Highlight of his time at Killie, was playing in the winning Scottish Cup team in 1997.
He joined Dunfermline in 2001 before signing up as St.Mirren player/Assistant Manager during the 2003 close season.
He made his competitive debut against Queens Park on the 2nd August 2003 in a league challenge cup match.
He was handed the dual role of assisting John Coughlin with team affairs and also to add some strength and consistency to the Saints defence.
When Coughlin stepped down from the managers role in November 2003 Gus took over as caretaker and his three matches produced two wins and a draw with much improved performances. This prompted the board to appoint him in a permanent capacity in December 2003.
